Phase 12: the new moon knight
"You're not ready for what's under my mask . . . You've taken the moon's light for granted . . .
But here's the new moon . . ."
--The Shroud (pretending to be Moon Knight)
(Vengeance of the Moon Knight, 2024 series, #2)
A new Moon Knight? Perhaps a "new" personality we've never met before, only newly manifested following his most recent demise? Readers were left to speculate, but not for long. As the imposter is revealed, fans are still left wondering whether Marc will return to the mask and cape. And when he does, it is with a bit of a costume change.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight
Issues 1-9 (Mar. - Nov. 2024): Writer Jed MacKay continues his 2021 Moon Knight series in this new series that borrows its name from the Gregg Hurwitz series, which incidentally also followed a series (the Huston/Benson one) that ran for 30 issues (however, this one concludes one issue earlier than the original series with this name). From the outset, the Moon Knight character in it is an imposter, not Mark, who is deceased for two-thirds of the series. And members of the Midnight Mission team branch out into a crossover event: Blood Hunt. (But since tracking the appearances of all non-Moon Knight characters from his series is beyond the scope of this website's intents, I won't be including that series here--see exceptions below). Moon Knight is shown in flashback in issue 6, but prior to that he is absent from the series until his return in issue 7.
Miguel O'Hara: Spider-Man 2099
Issue 2 (Mar. 2024): Writer Steve Orlando briefly includes a 2099 Moon Knight that is described as a "mummy god," though it is clearly meant to be the same one Orlando included in his Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis mini-series (see Phase 11: Exploring His Dark Side).
What If...? Venom
Issues 1-5 (Apr. - Aug. 2024): That's the beauty of the What If? titles; it doesn't matter if a character is dead. In this What If? scenario, writer Jeremy Holt works in the individual MK personas an issue at a time till they are all showcased in the final issue--working together!
Weapon X-Men
Issues 1 (May 2024): Christos Gage writes a tale of a team of Wolverines from different parts of the multiverse. Moon Knight appears in a few panels, most of them either blocked or from the back.
Spider-Woman
Issue 7 (Jul. 2024): From a "New Champions" variant cover for issue 28 of the previous page's main series, Moon Squire is officially introduced by writer Steve Foxe as part of the young hero group The Assembly. Only included here to note his "first appearance" for those who might be interested; it is clearly a different character, and further appearances will not be noted. (Appearance continues through issue 10.)
Doom
Issue 1 (Jul. 2024): Moon Knight's just a face on a montage spread in this Jonathan Hickman tale.
Ultimate Black Panther
Issue 4 (Jul. 2024): I don't know why ComicVine lists Moon Knight as being in this issue, but rest assured, whatever similar character writer Bryan Hill had in mind, it is NOT Moon Knight. If anything, it is August's issue 5 that has a character who could be (briefly) considered this alternate reality's Moon Knight; it seems there has been a mistake in the recorded appearance. And eventually this universe's very human-like Khonshu starts calling himself Moon Knight.
A Mighty Marvel Team-Up: Spiderman: Cosmic Chaos!
Hardbound Book (Jul. 2024): In Mike Maihack's third "Mighty Marvel Team-Up," Moon Knight is simply shown in one panel that flashes back to volume two [see Phase 11: Exploring His Dark Side].
Blood Hunt
Issues 4-5 (Aug. - Sep. 2024): Jed MacKay uses this storyline to bring Moon Knight back, when Hunter's Moon and Tigra bring the Wrecker to break Khonshu out of his Asgardian prison.
Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
Issue 0 (Sep. 2024): This recap by Jed MacKay, published in preparation for the next Moon Knight series, is not required, especially at its full price of $4.99. This should have been a freebie, as was the 2009 Moon Knight Saga, released in preparation for that year's new Vengeance of the Moon Knight series (see Phase 7: Redeemed at Last?), but at this price it felt like an unnecessary ripoff.
Phases of the Moon Knight
Issues 1-4 (Oct. 2024 - Jan. 2025): Various writers get to play in MK's backyard, telling tales of other Fists of Khonshu. The first issue has stories by Erica Schultz (who offers a prologue to the Shroud's entry on the scene as the imposter Fist) and Benjamin Percy, both of whom had previously contributed to Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood. Later issues offer a wide variety of tales (much more varied than Black, White & Blood had)--including humorous ones--and included writers Yuji Kaku, Justina Ireland, Chris Giarrusso, Fabian Nicieza, Tom Waltz, former Moon Knight artist Declan Shalvey, and even current Moon Knight scribe Jed MacKay.
Moon Knight
Annual 1 (Nov. 2024): This separate annual (not belonging to any current Moon Knight series and using a generic title) is actually part seven of a running crossover arc called "The Infinity Watch" and is written by Dan Watters. It features Colleen Wing, who is currently the owner of the Infinity Stone pertaining to the Mind.
Werewolf by Night: Red Band
Issues 2-3 (Nov.-Dec. 2024): Elsa Bloodstone visits the Midnight Mission to find out what Khonshu did to the moon that's making Jack Russell behave so out of control. Moon Knight is tasked with helping her investigate the matter. Written by Jason Loo.
Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
Issues 1- (Dec. 2024 - ): Jed MacKay begins a new series for Moon Knight, which was entirely unnecessary, since Marc returned as Moon Knight toward the end of his Vengeance of the Moon Knight series and no time was lost between series. The original series with this name (the first one that followed the original Moon Knight solo series) only lasted six issues, so it will be interesting to see how long this one lasts before being restarted under a new title--something Marvel now seems to like doing on a very regular basis.
Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds
Issue 1 (Jan. 2025): In the story written by Kelly Lynne D'Angelo (the comic has two tales written by different authors, plus a framing story by yet another), Moon Knight and Kahhori play out the traditional "fight against each other, then team up to fight another" scenario that's been a staple of superhero comics for decades.
Storm
Issue 2 (Jan. 2025): Mr. Knight appears in a photograph but is otherwise not involved in the action in Murewa Ayodele's tale.
What If...? Galactus Transformed Moon Knight
Issue 1 ( 2024): ...
What If...? Galactus Transformed Spider-Gwen
Issue 1 ( 2024): Moon Knight appears on a variant cover, but it is not known yet whether he will be inside as well.
